Note: I will update this page throughout the year, so be sure to come back and give it another read! You might just find something intriguing the next time you visit!

There are so many books out there that it’s practically impossible to read every single one. Lucky for us we only want to read books we’re interested in… but how do I know if I’m going to like it? And with so many options out there which should I read first? Those are all questions we as readers old and new have thought about. It’s definitely one I think about every single time when I pick up a book.

Today I’m going to talk about my reading interests and the books I’ve read. Hopefully, through reading this you will find a book to read for the week (or weekend). In addition, I’m also going to be sharing my 2024 TBR (to be read) list! If you have already read them feel free to share your opinions at the end of the blog 😃.

Contents

There are so many genres and tropes to pick from, how do you pick your favourite one? Well throughout our lives everyone has had a certain connection and pull towards a subject or topic, whether it be arts, history or science there are plenty of books out there for everyone.

As someone who has an interest in the future of our world, the development of human nature and the creation and destruction of the globe and civilisation, I was intrigued by the dystopian books. So that’s where I began my reading journey (the first dystopian book I read was Divergent), and from there I fell in love with reading.

Still unsure which book genre to read? Well, my advice for this is to just jump right in there, grab a book off your shelves or head down to your nearest library. Don’t forget that although you might like a genre now it may not stay your favourite forever so it’s good to explore different genres. I’ve for one removed and added numerous genres to my favourite genre list over the years. Currently, the genres I read are dystopian, fantasy, romance and finance.

Ok, now I know which genre(s) I like what about my tropes? If only that question was an easy one to answer, well it kind of is if you think about it. I didn’t discover my favourite trope till I explored different genres like fantasy, romance, finance and much much more.

Through reading a wide range of genres I realised that I only particularly enjoyed certain genres and never read the others again. But to pick a trope, that’s a difficult task. So many tropes can be intertwined, and if that wasn’t hard enough, your favourite trope can change with time as you expose yourself to more novels.

I’ve never been one to read or pay any particular interest in the Enemies to Lovers trope because I’ve always liked the idea of Childhood sweethearts, however as I read more books I slowly changed my opinions. Don’t get me wrong, I still like the Childhood Sweethearts trope but my current favourite is 100% enemies to lovers!

    Books I’ve Read and Recommend

So now you have an idea of what genre (maybe trope??) you would like to read and a bit about my favourites too, why don’t I get started with the books I’ve read and recommend (hope I didn’t take too long to get into it). I’ve selected books that I’ve read and recommend from the dystopian, fantasy and romance genres below:

    Dystopian Novels

Synopsis: In a future society divided into five factions, each representing a different virtue, the novel “Divergent” by Veronica Roth unfolds against the backdrop of a dystopian Chicago. Beatrice “Tris” Prior faces a monumental decision as she reaches adulthood: to remain with her family’s faction, Abnegation, known for selflessness, or to choose a different path.

In this world, control over one’s destiny is rigidly enforced, with each faction adhering strictly to its assigned roles and rules. The society suppresses individuality, demanding conformity above all else. However, Tris discovers she is threat to the established order. This revelation sets her on a dangerous journey of self-discovery and defiance against societal norms.

Tris’s quest for identity and freedom becomes an exhilarating adventure as she joins Dauntless, the faction dedicated to bravery and fearlessness. Here, she faces rigorous training, perilous challenges, and unexpected alliances. Amidst the trials, she develops a bond with Four, her enigmatic instructor, whose past holds secrets that intertwine with her own.

As Tris delves deeper into the complexities of her identity, she confronts the oppressive system that controls every aspect of her life. The narrative explores themes of choice, courage, and the struggle for autonomy, as Tris grapples with the consequences of defying societal expectations. With courage as her compass, she navigates through deception, betrayal, and heartache, determined to carve her own path.

In a world where conformity is prized above all else, Tris’s journey represents a daring escape from the confines of the matrix-like society, where individuality is suppressed in favor of uniformity.

    Great Weekend Reads

The books I would recommend for the weekend from the above list are:

Fault in our Stars, because it’s a stand-alone book and can be read in one sitting. But I just started reading, can I finish it in one day? Well, that depends on how fast you read and if you are interested in the genre and trope of the novel. When I first read this book I was still finding my way around the book world and I was definitely a slow reader so it took me a good week to finish that novel.

There is also a science fiction novel I want to share, it is called Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. This novel I read in one sitting, once starting it’s quite hard to put back down. I personally think the novel is a masterpiece as it shows the progression of the character to the reader in a very impactful way. I personally don’t like science fiction novels however this one I highly recommend!

    My 2024 TBR List

My reading goal for 2024 is to get back to reading (as I’ve not read for two years 😅, can’t wait to get back into it!), read more books (as with many readers) and expand my genres. My list of books to be read this year will consist of fantasy, mystery, dystopian etc.

    Fantasy

This is a new novel that is expected to be coming out in March of 2024! It’s a sequel to The Stolen Heir and is part of the Cruel Prince world! So for those that have already read that series, this novel may be just for you!

If you haven’t read the series you may want to check it out, however you can read The Stolen Heir and Prisoner’s Throne without having read the Cruel Prince series.

Upon doing research about the series I found that it follows the journey of Celaena (main female lead), the kingdoms most skilled and feared assassin as she navigates through multiple obstacles, getting entangled within the royal courts and untangling dark secrets hidden beneath their noses.

I read a few spoilers so the next part is what I found to be the most intriguing aspect of the series — Danger is forever luring in the shadows and every step could be your last, who you trust and where your loyalties lie may be the greatest weapons and danger.

The reading order of this series was hard to get a grip of, but I’ll share the list when I read the series later this year 😀.

You can get this book from amazon here.

Carnaval by Stephanie Garber takes place in the same world as Once Upon a Broken Heart. The novel is said to be filled with mystery as two sisters, Scarlett and Tella, are finally invited to to a Carnaval that promises participants a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

While at the Carnaval Scarlett (main female lead) tries to save her sister as she has been kidnapped, although she has been assured that it is part of the act, Scarlett can’t help but think it’s a lie.

This novel is known for the unpredictable plot twists, as a reader who loves plot twists that makes the novel more intriguing! However, I have also heard that this novel is not as good as Once upon a broken heart.

If you have read once upon a broken heart series, Jacks will be in the Carnaval series as well. And another important thing to note is that because their set in the same world and the last book of the Carnaval series and Once Upon a Broken Heart are in the same time frame.

Those that have read Once Upon a Broken Heart before Carnaval I am sorry to say but we made the same mistake and now know the ending of Carnaval. You can get Carnaval from amazon here.

You can check out my review, recommendations and reading guide of Once Upon a Broken Heart over here.

Update: Here is the Carnaval review!

From Blood to Ash is an intriguing novel, that has captured the hearts of many readers. The novel is centred around Poppy, whom exists in a world that’s coloured with darkness and drenched with blood. As she learns the dark truth that builds the foundation of her entire world, she is shook and unsure who to trust as her understanding of her own identity and feelings quickly waver.

It’s the unexpected twists and turns that truly captivate, ensuring that the journey through “From Blood and Ash” is anything but predictable. Ancient prophecies and hidden adversaries lurk around every corner, challenging characters and readers alike.

If you’re interested in reading more about this novel and my opinions of it, here is a blog that may be able to assist you 😁!

Note: I have read the second novel and it is so much more interesting than the first novel!

Here is a quote from the second novel (#2 A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire) in the From Blood and Ash series:

    Mystery

In “The Final Gambit,” readers are drawn deeper into the captivating mystery first introduced in “The Hawthorne Legacy.” As the story unfolds, secrets buried within the family’s history come to light, unraveling long-held mysteries and revealing hidden truths. With each page turn, readers are immersed in a suspenseful journey, eagerly uncovering the intricacies of the Hawthorne family’s dark past. From clandestine affairs to long-buried scandals.

You can get this book from amazon here.

I’ve recently finished the novel, whilst I write a blog post for it, check out my favourite quotes over in instagram.

    Time Fiction Novel

“Before the Coffee Gets Cold” has been on my TBR for quite a while now, I’ve just never gotten round to it. The novel is set in a small underground coffee shop in Tokyo, as the story goes, the coffee shop is able to take its customers through time back to the day they wish to visit.

Though, with every story about time travel there are lot of rules to be followed, wether you return back to the present depends on you.

The novel has integrated 4 mini stories within the novel, each character wanting to return to the past for their own reasons, be it heart break, regret or simply to find the answer to unanswered questions.

Apparently, this novel is supposed to take readers on an emotional ride… well there is only one way to find out.

You can get this book from amazon here.

Update: I have finished reading this novel, finally I can take tick it off my TBR lists! Check out my blog about this novel here.

Along that journey she discovers that she may have never truly knew her mother and the hardships she has overcome. During her adventures Lina falls in love with Florence and perhaps her friend as well.

Love & Gelato is also supposedly an emotional read.
